Three men accused in the killing of a Barrie man are scheduled for a week-long preliminary hearing in the new year.
Ryan Babineau, 30, was fatally stabbed on Dunlop Street East on Nov. 16, 2019.
Barrie police officers and Simcoe County paramedics responded to a reported stabbing at a lower-level apartment at 16 Dunlop St. E. that Saturday morning.
Babineau died in hospital.
An autopsy determined the cause of death to be consistent with a stabbing.
Cory Greavette, Tyler Wren and Abad Abdi Shire were all charged with first-degree murder in connection with Babineau’s killing, in addition to a host of other charges.
Lawyers for the three appeared in a virtual hearing in trial management court Tuesday to set a week-long preliminary hearing to start Jan. 4 and to be continued April 6-9 and April 12-16.
Greavette was arrested at a Barrie residence five days after the stabbing. In addition to murder, he faces charges of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and disguise with intent.
Shire had been incarcerated in northern Ontario on an unrelated matter and was arrested 13 days after the Barrie incident. He is facing the same charges as Greavette.
Wren was taken into custody by South Simcoe police officers nearly two weeks after the stabbing when he was accused of evading a RIDE check near Yonge Street and Innisfil Beach Road in Innisfil. He was also saddled with the same charges as the co-accused.
