Police trying to identify bike thief who then took it in for repairs

Bicycle stolen from a Mayfair Drive home, but staff at MEC on Bryne Drive recognized it and had it returned to its rightful owner

Barrie police are trying to identify a man who stole a bike from a south-end home.

Curiously, the thief then took it to a nearby store for repairs just a few days later where staff recognized the bike and had it returned to its rightful owner.

The suspect, however, remains at large. The culprit is described as a white male between 40 and 50 years old, standing five-foot-nine. He was wearing a red Toronto Blue Jays hat, red and black Dodge Ram hoodie, baggy red pants, and shiny black shoes.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon tells BarrieToday the bike was stolen Thursday, Sept. 3 from a garage on Mayfair Drive, which is located near Ardagh and Essa roads. A few days later, on Tuesday, Sept. 8, the bike was then brought to the MEC outlet on nearby Bryne Drive.

As it turns out, that's where the bike had been originally purchased and staff recognized the bike. They called the owner to let them know the bike was in the store and it was returned to them.

Leon said this incident highlights why it's crucial to take note of serial numbers on a bicycle in the event it is stolen.
