Simcoe County's first Week of Welcome kicks off June 15 in Barrie with a Municipal Service Fair and Entrepreneur Event.

At the Municipal Service Fair, attendees can explore and learn more about the services available in the area, including library services, fire, transit and parking, recreation and culture, police and more, according to a news release. There will also be remarks from Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall.

At the Entrepreneur Event, there will be an immigrant entrepreneur panel featuring people who will detail their experiences and what they have learned in their entrepreneurial journey in Simcoe County.

“I’m honoured to be involved in the County of Simcoe’s first Week of Welcome as a representative of the City of Barrie,” Nuttall stated in a news release. “Our city is a place that embraces newcomers and celebrates diversity, and this diversity only serves to strengthen the overall fabric of our community.”

Barrie is working with the Simcoe County Local Immigration Partnership to host the area’s first Week of Welcome, which is taking place until June 16.

Five events are scheduled throughout the week, including yesterday in Innisfil, today in New Tecumseth, Wednesday in Orillia, Thursday in Barrie; and Friday in Collingwood.

The Barrie events will take place June 15 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Barrie Public Library's downtown branch at 60 Worsley St., and then from 3-6 p.m. at The Sandbox Centre, 24 Maple Ave., second floor.

“Simcoe County is now home to 82,000 immigrants, and earlier this week to kick off Week of Welcome, we were proud to welcome approximately 40 new Canadians at the Citizenship Ceremony at the County Administration Centre,” Warden Basil Clarke stated in the news release. “Week of Welcome is a great opportunity to engage new residents and share information about our wide range of community services and supports throughout Simcoe County.”

Week of Welcome is hosted in partnership with the County of Simcoe and member municipalities. Funding has been provided by Canada’s Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
