The Barrie Public Library is preparing for the return of its annual Big Spring Book Sale held at the downtown branch May 24 to 26.

This multi-day sale has proven to be a highlight in our community, providing readers with the opportunity to refresh their home collections with pre-loved titles all while supporting their public library. Last year’s event drew in hundreds of readers of all ages from across the city and raised over $4,000 to support the library’s advancement in our community.

This event would not be possible without the team of volunteers who invest their time and energy into making it a great success. From sorting books, tallying totals, and refreshing tables as inventory sells, volunteers are truly the backbone to ensuring the sale runs smoothly throughout the weekend.

“I believe that libraries are a foundational block for every community. They are a community hub, and it is vital to do what we can to support the longevity of each library branch. Volunteering is one easy way to do my part,” states Samantha Coladipietro, lead volunteer for this year’s sale.

“Times are tough right now, and this book sale allows an opportunity to purchase books and other items more affordably. Literacy is one of the most important skills to learn, and supporting the library is the best way to keep these materials accessible to encourage lifelong learning,” adds Coladipietro.

The sale will feature a blend of materials that have been removed from the library’s collection, as well as community donations. If you would like to contribute, library volunteers are collecting donations of pre-loved books, magazines, audiobooks, DVDs, CDs, and video games at the downtown library café on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, May 21, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Wednesday, May 22, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Thursday, May 23, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Please note we are unable to accept textbooks, encyclopedias, or oversized coffee table books.

All proceeds from the book sale will help support the library and plan for future branches, as well as offer more ways for the community to discover new opportunities for lifelong learning through the Library of Things collection and tools within our Creative Spaces.

Patrons are encouraged to bring their own bag to the sale or purchase a reusable library bag for $2.
