Work crews were on scene today tearing down this home at 54 Sunnidale Rd., following a fatal fire on March 15.

The home involved in a deadly blaze March 15 was being torn down today as the on-scene investigation has come to a close.

Fire investigators had been at 54 Sunnidale Rd., for several days after flames tore through the residence just over a week ago.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, located between Wellington Street and the Highway 400 bridge, around 6 p.m. on Monday, March 15.

Two people were rushed to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) to be treated for smoke inhalation. A third person, who had been unaccounted for, was located inside the structure without vital signs and removed by firefighters. That person was taken to hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.

The deceased has been identified as a person in their early 40s who resided at the home. No other information, including the victim's gender, has been released.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday the cause of death was "consistent with being trapped" inside the burning structure.

Kristy Denette, public relations officer for the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM), told BarrieToday the decision to tear down the home was made by the property owner and the insurance company.

“The on-site investigation is over, so the home itself wasn’t needed on our end,” Denette said Wednesday. “We are still doing some lab analysis for the investigation and currently don’t have a final cause.”
