Victim in fatal fire on Sunnidale Rd. in their 'early 40s' and lived in the home, police say

Police have Sunnidale Road blocked off from Wellington Street to Shirley Avenue for the fire marshal's investigation

It was a busy night for Barrie firefighters as two blazes in the city had crews working well into the night.

Around 6 p.m., firefighters were called to a fire in a home at 54 Sunnidale Rd., near the Highway 400 overpass, where one person had been unaccounted for and crews had to go in to search for them.

Assistant Deputy Chief Derek Wilson told BarrieToday on Monday evening that the person was located without any vital signs and rushed to Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) where they were pronounced dead.

Wilson said he is still unsure about the condition of the other occupants of the home, as two people had been taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

“When we got there, there were three people around the property and we’re not sure if all of them were residents of the home or not," he said.

The fire are being investigated by the province's Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM). Officials are on scene today surveying the incident.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday the post-mortem examination is scheduled for today and officers are holding the scene at the direction of the coroner.

“The deceased was a resident of the home and in their early 40s," Leon said.

The person's age and gender have not been released.

Later on Monday, at approximately 9 p.m., Barrie firefighters were also called to a garage fire at 96 Stanley St., near Hanmer and Bayfield streets in the city's north end.

Wilson said there were no injuries at that location and the two occupants were outside the home when crews arrived.

“The fire started in the garage and extended into the home, but no one was hurt and damage was minimal,” he said. "The fire marshal has not been called to that scene and we have our investigators on this to determine the cause.”
