The Royal Canadian Air Force is set to do something "monumental" to mark the RCAF's centennial.

At a special event this spring, Canada's air force, in collaboration with the RCAF Honorary Colonels, will unveil the Ad Astra Monument, crafted by renowned local sculptor Marlene Hilton Moore.

Positioned at the entrance to Canadian Forces Base Borden, located about 20 minutes west of Barrie and the birthplace of Canada’s air force in 1920, the monument is meant to symbolize the foundation of a century of aviation excellence.

Ad Astra is Latin for "to the stars."

You can find more details about the April 2 unveiling in the following news release:

The RCAF Honorary Colonels, in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), are thrilled to announce the upcoming unveiling event of the Ad Astra Monument.

Scheduled for April 2, near the entrance of CFB Borden in Angus, the event is an historic celebration marking the RCAF's centennial.

We extend a warm invitation to the public, urging everyone to be part of this momentous occasion. Join us at the unveiling to witness the illumination of the Ad Astra Monument, honouring the pioneers and heroes of the RCAF.

Join us in creating a sense of unity, pride, and appreciation for our shared history. This unveiling is not just an event; it's an opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate.

Ad Astra, Latin for "to the stars," serves as the inspiration for the monument, aligned with the RCAF’s Air Command motto, "Sic Itur Ad Astra" – "Such is the pathway to the stars."

Renowned sculptor Marlene Hilton Moore crafted this visual masterpiece, featuring a column with LED illumination on a pedestal. As dusk falls, it will emit a gentle blue glow into the sky, symbolizing the journey "from the birthplace of the RCAF to the stars."

Positioned at the entrance to Base Borden, the birthplace of Canada’s Air Force in 1920, this monument symbolizes the foundation of a century of aviation excellence and pays homage to the historical roots and everlasting legacy of the RCAF.

This monument honours the sacrifices and achievements of our aviators who have served Canada over the past century and the important role that the RCAF will continue to play in Canada’s future.

This is a story of courage and sacrifice that has shaped our nation’s military history and heritage. Together, we celebrate our centennial, honour our veterans, and recognize today’s Air Force personnel, whose dedication and professionalism keep our skies safe.

Purposefully crafted to celebrate, commemorate, and provide a meaningful tribute to the 100th anniversary, the monument will reside near Base Borden, the birthplace of the RCAF.

The base stands as a living testament to the courage and innovation that birthed our Air Force. Every corner of Base Borden whispers tales of daring aviators and groundbreaking moments.

Today, this historic base is home to the dedicated 16 Wing Borden, responsible for coordinating the activities of six RCAF schools, two of which are co-located in Borden. Each plays a crucial role in shaping the future of our air forces.
