Fire damages southeast Barrie home also impacted by July tornado

The cause and origin of a fire on Sun King Crescent are still undetermined, say Barrie Fire officials

The owner of a home damaged in the July 15 tornado now has to contend with fire and smoke damage following a garage fire Saturday evening.

Crews received a 911 call at 7:42 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18 after neighbours of the Sun King Crescent home noticed smoke coming from the garage,  Barrie Fire & Emergency Services Deputy Chief Carrie Clark told BarrieToday.

Four apparatus and a platoon responded to the fire, which she said started in the garage.

“The majority of the fire damage is in the garage, however there is some smoke that got into the house,” she said.

Clark said crews had the fire extinguished quite quickly, however the overhaul and checking for extension took a bit longer.

“I would say (the fire) was under control within 15 minutes,” she said. “When a fire occurs, the smoke and the heat from the fire is able to get into nooks and crannies… and areas you can’t always see. (Firefighters) sometimes have to pull ceiling or open walls to see if the fire has been able to make its way into enclosed areas. If they found anything, they extinguished it, and there was no extension to any exposures - so no other houses around (were impacted).”

The cause and origin of the fire are still undetermined, Clark said, adding they are holding the scene until the investigator is available on Monday.

“The house was under renovation due to the tornado, so there was already some damage that was being worked on. That makes it less clear as to what was happening at the time (of the fire). No one was living there at the time and there were no injuries.”
