An Orillia woman in her 70s died Wednesday at Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital after being admitted for COVID-19.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit confirmed her death this afternoon.

The woman's case was reported by the health unit on March 24.

The health unit confirmed this was a case of community transmission as the woman had no travel history or contact with known COVID-19 cases.

"I would like to express my condolences to her family for the loss of their family member," said Dr. Charles Gardner, the medical officer of health.

Two men in Barrie, both in their 70s and who had pre-existing medical conditions, have also died recently from the coronavirus at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH).

At the time, Gardner said the two men in Barrie had “frequent, prolonged exposure to each other in the community."

The hospital has since confirmed the two men were related.

One of the men was visiting Barrie from Alberta.
