South Simcoe Police Service (SSPS) has laid charges in relation to violations of COVID-19 Emergency Orders.
Since May 2020, police have been conducting compliance checks in partnership with local bylaw officers in the ongoing enforcement of COVID-19 Emergency Orders.
Police have taken the following enforcement actions in relation to occurrences where people were not in compliance with the requirement to quarantine for 14 days after travel and returning to Canada:
• A 38-year-old woman travelled from the U.S. to Canada and was to be quarantining at a family member's Innisfil home for a period of 14 days. Upon police arrival, the woman was not home and relatives indicated to police that she went shopping. When the woman returned home, she was charged with failing to comply with an order under the Quarantine Act.
• A 51-year-old Innisfil man returned home from the Caribbean. When a quarantine check was completed, it was determined that he was with friends in Toronto shopping. The man later returned home and was charged with failing to comply with an order under the Quarantine Act.
• A 31-year-old woman from Toronto provided an Innisfil address for her quarantine location. A compliance check by SSPS showed the woman was not there. She was contacted by police and it was determined that she was at her Toronto home. Caution given.
During this holiday season, SSPS joins public health officials in urging Bradford and Innisfil residents and visitors to adhere to the Emergency Orders to prevent the spread of the virus. In addition to the obvious health risks, failing to comply with the Emergency Orders can result in fines of up to $1,000.
