INNISFIL - A 17-year-old Innisfil boy is facing numerous charges following a police pursuit involving an all terrain vehicle (ATV).

On Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020 around 2:30 p.m., a South Simcoe Police Service officer attempted to stop an ATV driver who was not wearing a helmet on Anna Maria Avenue. The driver failed to stop and fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

A speed measurement was obtained of 99 km/h in a posted 40 km/h Community Safety Zone. The ATV continued to speed erratically through traffic and the officer discontinued the pursuit due to public safety. 

Further investigation by the officer led to the identity and arrest of the driver.

A 17-year-old youth has been charged with:
    •    Dangerous operation
    •    Flight from peace officer
    •    Stunt driving
    •    Speeding
    •    Drive motor vehicle no licence
    •    Fail to wear proper helmet

The youth, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was released with a future court date.

For on-road riding, an all terrain or off-road vehicle driver must:
    •    be at least 16 years old
    •    hold at least a valid G2 or M2 licence
    •    wear an approved motorcycle helmet, securely fastened under the chin with a chin strap
    •    wear a seat belt, where provided
    •    travel at speeds less than the posted speed limit
