'Tech-savvy' parents help track down stolen phones

'It's very opportunistic and shameful,' Barrie police official says of thefts from East Bayfield Community Centre

A number of phones stolen from a north-end Barrie recreation centre Sunday were found thanks to some quick-thinking parents.

On Sunday evening, city police responded to a report of several cellphones, debit cards and other personal property that had been stolen from a change room at the East Bayfield Community Centre.

It was reported earlier that 13 people had property stolen, but Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday the majority of the phones were located through “some tech-savvy parental involvement.”

“I can’t go too much into it as the investigation is ongoing but yes, many phones were recovered,” he said Monday afternoon.

A person with knowledge of the situation told BarrieToday that many phones were located due to an app that allows you to find where your phone is by accessing a tracking device.

Leon said police are asking for any video surveillance that may assist in the investigatio. He also said it was a shame someone took advantage of kids getting out.

“These kids are finally getting out of the house and back into sports and now they have to deal with this. It's very opportunistic and shameful,” said Leon.
