Barrie police are investigating a "rather bizarre theft" after someone stole flowers and even some of the dirt from a west-end home.

The incident was reported to city police on Wednesday, June 14 following an incident that had taken place earlier in the day at a Jagges Drive residence, in the area of Ferndale and Edgehill drives.

The resident told police that sometime between 7:20 a.m. and 7:37 a.m., an unknown person dug out a plant from a garden that contained what are described as 20 Irish flowers.

The person responsible also took the dirt and left a hole in the ground that was approximately 45 centimetres in diameter, according to police.

On Monday, a Collete Crescent resident also notified Barrie police that two black planters were stolen from their home's porch sometime prior to the report being made, likely over the weekend. The planters were valued at $140.

"Thefts like these are certainly not common, but police are asking the public to report any suspicious persons or activity to police immediately," Barrie police stated in a news release on Thursday. "Community safety is a shared responsibility and by working together, we can keep personal property where it belongs and not in the hands of opportunistic thieves."
