Police say woman extorted over misplaced cellphone; teens charged

INNISFIL - South Simcoe Police Service officers have charged two men with theft and extortion over a stolen cellphone.

The theft occurred on Saturday, June 15, 2019 after a woman forgot her cellphone in the back of a taxi in Innisfil. The woman called the phone and after hearing two voices, she was told she would have to pay a sum of money to get her phone back.  

She made arrangements to meet the suspects, but instead went to our South Division to report the incident.  

Following a detailed investigation, police have charged two 18-year-old men from Toronto and Aurora with a number of offences including theft, extortion and possession of stolen property. Both men were held for bail hearings.
