INNISFIL - Ramping up to the Thanksgiving holiday weekend we got off to a very disappointing start with drivers apprehended for two of the Big four causations of loss of life and life altering injuries in motor vehicle crashes.
High blower - impaired driver
On Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018 around 4 p.m., a citizen called South Simcoe Police Service to report a suspected impaired driver travelling in Innisfil. The caller told police the suspect vehicle was being driven erratically and well below the posted speed limit.
Officers were able to pull the vehicle over on Sideroad 10 and after noting the usual signs of impairment, the 34-year-old female driver from Barrie was arrested. She was transported to the North Division for breath tests.
Those tests resulted in readings of 385 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood and 402 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Along with now facing serious drinking driving related charges, the woman’s driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and her vehicle impounded for seven days.
Our sincerest gratitude to the citizen who called this in. It is incomprehensible how someone could get behind the wheel of a car with any level of impairment, let alone five times the legal limit.
Stunt driver - community safety zone
In Cookstown, a 38-year-old Creemore man was charged with Stunt Driving after a driver was clocked travelling more than 50 km/hr above the speed limit in a Community Safety Zone.
On Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, around 1:30 p.m., an officer conducting traffic enforcement obtained a speed measurement on a commercial truck of 101 km/hr in a posted 40 km/h Community Safety Zone in front of Cookstown Public School on County Rd. 27. The driver was charged with stunt driving. His licence has been suspended for seven days.
Speeding is an aggressive driving behaviour, one which we will be targeting this weekend for Operation Impact. The national road safety campaign focuses on the 'Big 4' high risk driving offences: aggressive and impaired driving, lack of seat belt use and distracted driving.

And last but not least, there's the speeder that got away.
On Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018 around 3 p.m., a South Simcoe Police Service officer in an unmarked vehicle travelling northbound on Yonge Street in Innisfil was passed by a speeding vehicle.
The vehicle continued travelling northbound in the southbound lane at a high rate of speed and passed multiple vehicles, narrowly avoiding one head-on collision before disappearing out of sight in the distance.
It is extremely fortunate that no one was injured or killed as a result of this driver's extremely reckless behaviour. This selfish person not only put themselves at risk, but also the unsuspecting innocent motorists who shared the roadway.
