Officers search for a suspect who fled from Barrie police on Sunday in the D'Ambrosio Drive area in the city's south end.

Barrie police brought out one of their four-legged members to help find a suspect who had fled on foot after officers attempted to pull over a suspected prohibited driver, Sunday evening.

“Officers were conducting a proactive patrol in the Yonge (Street) and Little (Avenue) area and observed a male they knew was a prohibited driver," said Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon. "They attempted to stop that vehicle to conduct an investigation, at which time the driver sped off."

The driver of the vehicle, along with a female passenger, both fled on foot in the D’Ambrosio Drive area.

The female, who was later released unconditionally, was apprehended right away, noted Leon.

Police brought in a canine track and located the male suspect a short distance away, about an hour after the incident began.

A 31-year-old Barrie man has been charged with flight from police, driving while prohibited and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on June 7.
