Orillia man accused of assault with a weapon during robbery: OPP

Victim from Albert Street residence was treated and released; 39-year-old Orillia man faces several serious charges

The Orillia Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have arrested a male in relation to a robbery in the city of Orillia.

On Sept. 1, 2019 shortly before 6 a.m. the Orillia OPP were called to a residence on Albert Street South by the County of Simcoe Paramedic Services (CSPS) who reported a person had been assaulted with a weapon.

Police arrived on the scene and observed the victim to have injuries consistent with those made by an edged weapon. The victim was transported to (Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital) where he was treated and later released.

After a short initial investigation police arrested 39-year-old William Mathis of Orillia. The suspect has been charged with:

  • Assault with a weapon contrary to Section 267(a) of the Criminal Code.
  • Robbery contrary to Section 343(a) of the Criminal Code.
  • Mischief under $5,000 contrary to Section 430(4) of the Criminal Code.
  • Forcible confinement contrary to Section 279(2) of the Criminal Code.
  • Carrying concealed weapon contrary to Section 90 of the Criminal Code.
  • Unlawfully in a dwelling house contrary to Section 349(1) of the Criminal Code.

The accused was remanded into custody and set to appear next in the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on Sept. 25, 2019.
