New Year's party goers were generally 'well behaved,' police say

It was a busy night for Barrie police officers over the weekend; Saturday celebration was a 'good family night for those who had young children'

It was a busy night for Barrie police officers New Year's Eve, but nothing serious occurred and celebrations were relatively quiet, police say.

City police responded to more than 450 calls for service over the weekend, but according to communications co-ordinator Peter Leon, overall there was nothing serious that involved any New Year's-related activity.

“There was only one impaired and that was as a result of a motor vehicle collision on Friday evening just before 10 p.m.,” said Leon. “As for calls for service, we had 198 on Friday, 172 on Saturday and 89 as of 11 a.m. today. Between midnight and 3:15 a.m .there were 49 calls for service.”

Leon also confirmed there were six arrests for public intoxication overnight; each was held and later released when sober, he said.

As for the crowded Downtown Countdown near City Hall that included musical acts, food trucks and bouncy castles for kids, Leon said it was a good night.

“We had a dedicated group of officers working the downtown celebrations and everyone, for the most part, was well behaved,” said Leon. “A good family night for those who had young children, and later for those who attended for the music and fireworks.”
