New scam has Barrie police asking people to mindful of their jewels

'We like to think the best of others. We want to believe that people are good-hearted and aren’t trying to cause ill towards us,' says police official

Barrie police are warning the public about people trying to sell jewelry in area parking lots.

Police received a call from a resident who reported being approached by someone attempting to sell them jewelry.

The thieves will attempt to put the necklace on you and take the jewelry you're wearing, all the while their jewelry is worthless, according to city police.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon said the would-be victim was lucky this time.

Leon wants the community to remain mindful and aware of their surroundings.

“Thankfully, the individual who contacted us to make us aware did not allow the person to get close enough for anything to happen,” he said. “She recognized what was potentially coming her way and averted it. She let us know as well as people in her community.”

Despite many warnings from police on potential scams, Leon said people still fall victim to them. And while it is unfortunate, he understands why.

“I think we like to think the best of others. We want to believe that people are good-hearted and aren’t trying to cause ill towards us,” said Leon. “That said, there are those who take advantage of people, even during the current times, and we all need to be aware of that.”

Leon reminds everyone to watch their valuables, including the PIN on your credit cards. And when in doubt, keep someone away by asking them to keep their physical distance.

“If ever you aren’t sure of someone’s intentions, be loud. Make it uncomfortable for them to make a move before they do and alert others in the area,” said Leon.
