Two people sent to hospital

Two people were sent to hospital following an apartment fire on Dunlop Street West near Maple Avenue this morning.

Barrie Fire and Emergency Services received multiple 9-1-1 calls just after 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 1 reporting an apartment on fire above the Pita Pit on Dunlop Street, Deputy Fire Chief Carrie Clark told BarrieToday

“When we arrived there were flames issuing out of the window from the upper apartment and two people had been able to evacuate from the apartment. They were transported to hospital, one with thermal injuries and one with smoke inhalation," she said.

Five trucks and 20 firefighters were on the scene at the early morning blaze.

One person has since been released from hospital, however the individual who suffered burns remains in hospital.

“The fire, at this point, does not appear suspicious, however we do have an injury so the fire marshal's office has sent us investigators and we are working with the (Office of the Fire Marshal) and Barrie police on the origin and circumstance of this fire,” she said.

Two people were home in the unit where the fire started, Clark noted, however a second apartment in the building did sustain some smoke damage. The residents were not home at the time.

“It was a quick knockdown of the fire and it took a long time to ventilate out of the spaces to get the fumes and the carbon monoxide out,” she said. “We have isolated all of the power and gas and there is no estimate on damage at this time, however (the Pita Pit) will be out of business for however long it takes before it can be repaired."

Dunlop Street West is closed between Maple Avenue and Bayfield Street while the fire is investigated and is expected to remain closed until approximately 5 p.m.
