BARRIE – A 24-year-old Zephyr man has been charged with stunt driving and impaired driving after being stopped by an officer travelling from one RIDE check to another.

On Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1 a.m., the officer was on the ramp to Highway 400 South when a southbound vehicle was observed travelling at a high rate of speed. Using a radar device, the officer obtained a speed measurement of 154 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. With emergency lights and siren activated, the officer attempted to pull over the vehicle, which eventually stopped just north of the Essa Road off-ramp. While speaking with the driver, the officer detected an odour of alcohol. A roadside breath test was conducted, which resulted in a fail.

OPP officers who were at a RIDE check at Dunlop Street and Highway 400 attended the scene and the male driver was arrested without incident. The female passenger refused to leave the vehicle and was also arrested without incident. The pair was taken to the Barrie OPP detachment, where further testing resulted in a charge of over 80 against the driver. He was also charged with impaired care and control, stunt driving and speeding. The man's licence was suspended and his vehicle impounded. He was released with a November court date.
