Man accused of assaulting police during arrest in Innisfil

UPDATE: On Jan. 26, 2024 in Newmarket court, Garin Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to assaulting a peace officer. He was sentenced to two years' probation and given a suspended sentence. The other five charges were dropped, according to court records.

South Simcoe police say one of their officers was assaulted Sunday evening while trying to arrest a local man in Innisfil.

On Sunday, May 1, 2022, at approximately 9:50 p.m., police were called to a store in the area of Jans Boulevard and Innisfil Beach Beach Road for a reported theft.

Once on scene, officers learned that a man was refused service because he was allegedly intoxicated.

It is further alleged that the suspect left the store without paying for his alcohol and threatened store employees.

When officers attempted to place the man in custody, police say he resisted arrest and one of the officers was assaulted.

The officer was treated in hospital and released.

Garin Kilpatrick, 34, has been charged with assaulting a peace officer, assault with intent to resist arrest, uttering threats, causing a disturbance, theft under $5,000, and mischief under $5,000. He was released with a future court date.
