LISTEN: Marine unit rescues 3 Lake Simcoe boaters after craft capsizes

The man in distress was able to hold his cellphone out of the water to allow police dispatch to trace the location

Officers with the York Regional Police Marine Unit rescued three people after their boat capsized on Lake Simcoe.

On Thursday, Aug. 27, 2020, shortly after 5:30 p.m., York Regional Police received a 911 call from a boater in distress. Officers learned that a boat with three occupants was operating in open waters on Lake Simcoe when sudden winds caused significant waves.

The boat tipped over and the three adults, who thankfully were wearing life jackets, were thrown into the water. The caller was able to hold up his cellphone out of the water to allow police dispatch to trace the phone location. The call taker worked with Marine Unit officers to locate the boaters.

They were all pulled to safety and fortunately were not injured.

Officers with the Marine Unit would like to remind residents that weather conditions can change quickly resulting in high winds and large waves. Always wear a properly-fitted life jacket, bring a cell phone, plan your route and tell someone where you’re going.
