'Active investigation' prompts heavy police presence in Orillia

Officers advise people in the area to lock their doors and stay inside and urge people to avoid the area due to the ongoing investigation

There is a heavy police presence at the north end of West Street in Orillia this afternoon as Ontario Provincial Police officers conduct an "active investigation."

A reporter at the scene says there are 12 OPP cruisers in addition to paramedics lined up on West Street around a townhouse unit at the complex at 451 West St. N. Other specialty units, including tactical, have since arrived.

Several people say they saw officers with guns visible.

According to Nosey Neighbours, officers responded to a "high-priority" weapons call after a male, armed with what was described as a revolver, yelled at some kids in the area.

Officers advised people in the area to lock their doors and stay inside until the situation is under control.

The City of Orillia Tweeted that the "heavy police presence" was not impacting the municipal voting station at nearby Patrick Fogarty Catholic Secondary School.

The Orillia OPP could not be reached for comment.

This is a developing story and updates will be provided as they become available.
