'Friendly conversation' leads to unprovoked downtown attack

Barrie police official says victim was struck in the jaw and hit his head on the ground following assault early Sunday morning

Barrie police are searching for a man accused of a random and unprovoked attack that happened downtown on Sunday morning.

The assault occurred on Dunlop Street, near the Five Points, on Oct. 16 at 2:45 a.m.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon said the victim was walking along Dunlop Street with a friend when they engaged in a "friendly conversation" with the suspect and another man.

“For unknown reasons, the suspect then struck the victim in the jaw and he fell, striking his head on the ground,” Leon told BarrieToday.

The victim was assessed by paramedics after suffering injuries that were considered minor.

"The victim and suspect were not known to one another and no argument precipitated this interaction," Leon said.

The suspect is described as being in his mid-20s or 30s, standing six feet tall with an average build.
