Provincial police say a deadly motorcycle collision Monday morning on Highway 401 in the Kitchener area, which claimed the life of a 55-year-old Barrie man, may have been caused, in part, by someone riding a bicycle on the highway.

Officers from the OPP's Highway Safety Division (HSD) in Mississauga are working with the Cambridge OPP detachment to investigate the single vehicle motorcycle collision.

On May 8, at 7:43 a.m., the OPP were called to Highway 401 westbound, between Highway 8 and Homer Watson Boulevard, in Kitchener.

Police say the motorcycle rider lost control as traffic slowed ahead and was thrown from the motorcycle, sustaining fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. His identity has not been released.

The OPP-HSD Traffic Support Unit is assisting with the investigation. Police said they received information that a cyclist may have been riding a bicycle just ahead of the collision scene resulting in the slow-down of traffic.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been laid.

The westbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed at Highway 8 until 1 p.m., Monday, resulting in lengthy delays as westbound highway traffic was diverted down Shantz Hill to Fountain Street South.

Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call the OPP at 519-655-0150.
