Clear the snow before you go, avoid the fine: Police

'It just takes a few minutes and it’s not only required by law, but at the same time people need to be able to see,' says Barrie police official

Police are reminding drivers that not clearing the snow from your car can be an unneeded expense this time of year.

A picture on the Barrie police Twitter account Monday showed a vehicle pulled over in downtown Barrie that had one small spot of its back window cleared of snow.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday it's that time of year and road safety is paramount.

“It just takes a few minutes and it’s not only required by law, but at the same time people need to be able to see,” he said. “You can tell in the photo we provided that the person just used their arm to clean a bit off, but it's not enough.”

Leon said that while he guesses some people believe the defroster will help, he stated that the front, rear and side windows need to be clear before you move the vehicle.

“The license plate needs to be clear as well. Obviously, there are times on a day with heavy winter conditions where the snow kicks up and onto the plate, we understand that," he added. "But clear it before you leave along with the windows, again, it just takes a couple of minutes.

“Also, clear off the top of your vehicle so snow doesn’t fly off into other vehicles as you’re travelling down the highway.”

The fine for not clearing the snow from the driver's sight is $110.

“I know everybody is in a rush, but that kind of fine isn’t needed at this time of year, or any time of year for that matter,” said Leon.
