Police seek witnesses to crash that killed 88-year-old pedestrian Tuesday

'I hope it was no one from (my building), but it's sad no matter who it is,' says Rose Street resident

The fatal crash that took the life of an 88-year-old man Tuesday afternoon is still being investigated by Barrie police and officers are appealing to anyone with dash-cam footage of the incident.

Police received a call at 1:39 p.m., Tuesday, regarding a pedestrian who had been struck and killed by a vehicle near Georgian College. Duckworth Street was closed between Bell Farm Road and Rose Street, as well as Bernick Drive at Duckworth, for the police investigation.

A woman who lives at 262 Rose St., the building at the corner where the fatal collision happened, said she doesn't know who was hit, but wonders if it was someone from her building.

“There are a lot of seniors in the building and many like to go for a walk to Timmies for tea or coffee,” said 76-year-old Sophia, who didn't want to provide her last name. “I hope it was no one from here, but it's sad no matter who it is.”

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon told BarrieToday the investigation remains ongoing and there have been no charges laid.

Police are seeking dash-cam video and asking for witnesses to the incident.

While what caused the crash has not been determined, Georgian College student Shamir Rashdan said speeding is an issue along that stretch of Duckworth Street.

“I know some people like to blame the college students... but I see just as many older people speeding as they come off the highway and are trying to get home or wherever they’re heading," Rashdan said.
