Barrie police say an eagle-eyed citizen help take an alleged drunk driver off the streets last night.

At around 6 p.m., Sunday, March 19, city police were alerted to a suspected impaired driver on Dunlop Street.

Police say the vehicle was initially observed travelling in Springwater Township and was followed by a concerned citizen and a passenger, who was providing police with updated information as they approached and entered the city.

Police say the citizen was able to safely get the car stopped and removed the keys from the ignition while officers responded.

When officers arrived on scene, police say they arrested a 21-year-old Woodbridge woman for impaired driving.

The investigation continued at Barrie Police Headquarters on Fairview Road where a breathalyzer technician assisted with obtaining breath samples from the driver.

Police say the driver had "well over" three times the legal limit of alcohol in her system.

The woman was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and over .80s milligrams. She is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on April 12, 2023.

The vehicle was impounded for seven days and her driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days.

"Barrie police wish to thank the concerned citizens who acted in a manner that no doubt prevented a serious motor vehicle collision from taking place," police said in a news release Monday morning. "It is actions such as these that involve impaired drivers that police feel are worth acknowledging as they contribute significantly to making our roads safer for everyone who uses them."
