Charges laid after man found asleep at the wheel

Barrie Police Service took another impaired driver off the streets after a concerned citizen could not wake a male driver who's vehicle was sitting in the middle of an east end Barrie intersection.

On Tuesday, Jan. 2 , 2018 at 7:10 p.m., officers were called to the intersection of Dundonald Street and Amelia Street in the City of Barrie for a male asleep in a vehicle. 

The vehicle was in park but was running in the middle of the intersection and the male could not be woken. After many attempts, officers were able to rouse the male who showed obvious signs of impairment.

He was immediately arrested and taken back the the Barrie Police Service for further breath tests which he failed.  

The 31-year-old Barrie male was charged with impaired driving and over 80mgs of alcohol in blood. He also received a 90-day licence suspension; as well his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

We want to thank the members of the community for helping us stop and arrest impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1. If you see dangerous driving or believe a driver is under the influence of either alcohol or drugs, you are encouraged to contact police immediately.

Behaviour that could jeopardize the safety of motorists and pedestrians is considered a life-threatening crime in progress and we will continue to respond to these calls.

Barrie Police Service thanks the citizens who chose to make the right decision not to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs and plan ahead for a safe ride home.
