Provincial police have blocked off a portion of Davis Street in Collingwood and evacuated "several" residences in the area after discovering a suspicious package, Friday.

Collingwood OPP Const. Martin Hachey said the street crimes unit was in the area executing a search warrant when they discovered the package.

Though the package has not been confirmed as an explosive item, police are "taking no chances to ensure the safety of residents in the area," Hachey said.

The OPP explosives disposal unit was dispatched to the scene to dispose of the package.

Residents will be notified once it is safe to return to their homes. The public is asked to avoid the area.
