The Nottawasaga detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding the community that students will soon be returning to school just after the long weekend with a bit of a staggering start.

The community should expect an increase in foot traffic, bicycle traffic and vehicles in the morning, during lunch breaks and after school hours.

For some young students, this will be their first school year adjusting to walking and crossing streets. Please be patient and plan to leave a little earlier in the morning if needed.

The Nottawasaga OPP is urging motorists to drive safely and be vigilant, particularly when travelling through residential areas and school zones. Let’s all do our part to ensure that every student arrives to and from school safely.

Safety tips for drivers:

  • Focus 100 per cent of your attention to the road, put away all unnecessary distractions
  • Slow down in school zones and respect posted speed limits
  • Be aware of approaching school buses with their alternating red lights flashing and stop arm extended

Safety tips for families:

  • Review safe routes to school with your children
  • Review proper safety equipment and road safety while crossing streets on foot or bicycle
  • It’s important for everyone to put away distractions (cellphones) when near vehicles and when crossing streets
  • Being aware of their surroundings is an important message to discuss to help get them to and from school safely

“The safety of our communities is of utmost importance. Expect heightened police presence in school zones before and after school. Be mindful of speed limits and avoid any unnecessary distractions,”  said traffic Sgt. Eric Steele.
