Barrie driver faces multiple charges after swerving 'all over the road'

Two people from Barrie face multiple charges after incident in northern Ontario

MARKSTAY-WARREN – On May 24, 2020 at 2:50 p.m., members from the Nipissing West (Sudbury) Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to three separate traffic complaints regarding a vehicle swerving all over the road, travelling westbound on Hwy 17 near Sutcliffe Road, in the Municipality of Markstay-Warren.  

Officers subsequently located and stopped the vehicle on Hwy 17, east of Markstay.  

Upon speaking with the driver, officers determined the individual was impaired and he was arrested.  

Officers seized a quantity of drugs suspected to be Fentanyl.   

As a result of the investigation, the driver, Marlon Carelse-Brown, age 30, from Barrie, was charged with:    

  • Operation While Impaired - Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code (CC);   
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA);  
  • Dangerous Operation, contrary to section 320.13(1) of the CC; and 
  • Driving Motor Vehicle with Liquor Readily Available, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act.

The passenger, Aletta Dawkins, age 28, also from Barrie, was charged with:    

  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking - Opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA.  

Both accused were released by way of an Undertaking and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on July 22, 2020, in Sudbury.  

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
