NEWS RELEASE
ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE
*************************
On Tuesday, March 13, 2018, members of the Nottawasaga Detachment, Ontario Provincial Police were called to the premises of a local business regarding a counterfeit $100 note which they had received.

The bill was a poor quality counterfeit. The metallic strip which is embedded in a genuine bill, was just a strip of silver coloured tape. The colour on the bill was flaking off and appeared to have been applied like water colours.

Merchants are being warned to check paper currency carefully. Educational materials can be found on the Bank of Canada website.

If you encounter or suspect the money you receive is counterfeit, you should take the following precautions:

  • Politely refuse the note and explain that you suspect it may be counterfeit
  • Advise the person to check the note with the Nottawasaga OPP
  • Inform the Nottawasaga OPP of a possible attempt to pass the suspected bill, and make note of person and vehicle description

If you find counterfeit currency following a transaction, please contact the Nottawasaga OPP (1-888-310-1122)
