Pair of Barrie Baycats named to IBL all-star teams

A pair of Barrie Baycats have been named to the Intercounty Basball League's all-star teams for the 2021 season. 

Jake Wilson was selected to the first all-star as an outfielder, while right-handed pitcher Juan Benitez was named to the second team. 

Wilson was among the league leaders in batting average, hitting .362 over 29 games with 47 hits (third in the league) in 130 at-bats (the most in the IBL), and 28 runs scored.

The 23-year-old Barrie native, who grew up in New Lowell, was playing in his rookie IBL season. He had eight doubles, two triples and four home runs. He also drove in 17 runs and had nine walks and 22 strikeouts. He committed only two errors in the field.

Wilson also finished second in rookie-of-the-year voting this season. 

Benitez, meanwhile, allowed 61 hits and 28 runs (21 earned) in 10 games this season with the Baycats, his first year in the IBL. He had a 3.05 earned run average, which was third best in the league. He also had 46 strikeouts and 21 walks. He finished with a 5-2 record. 

The 29-year-old native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic pitched 62 innings, which was second most in the league, and had one complete game.

The all-star teams are voted by IBL coaches and management in each of the league’s seven active member cities.
