An Orillia athlete shone at the Ontario Youth Nordic Ski Championships this weekend.

Anna Vurma, a Grade 7 student at Regent Park Public School in Orillia, won both the 4-km interval start freestyle and the 4-km mass start classic races for U14 girls. The races were hosted by the Soo Finnish Ski Club at the Hiawatha Ski Trails in Sault Ste Marie.

Vurma was up against more than 40 other Grade 7 and 8 girls in the competition. Teammate, and Barrie resident, Percy Wiersma placed second in both the U14 boys races. Both skiers are members of Team Hardwood and train at Hardwood Ski and Bike under coach Jack Sasseville.

Several hundred skiers from across Ontario competed in the two-day event. Team Hardwood had eight athletes competing in the event and hopes to build on this success next year with even more athletes participating.
