Colts clinch playoff spot despite big loss to Petes

Barrie has given up 24 goals in four games, but can still mathematically clinch the Central Division with big turnaround

The Colts Barrie ended their weekend on a losing note in Peterborough as they were handed a 6-1 loss by the home team in Ontario Hockey League, Sunday afternoon.

The Colts jumped on the board with a first-period goal by forward Josh Nelson, with assists from Nicholas Porco and Victor Hadfield.

From then on, it was all Peterborough as the third-place team in the Eastern Conference showed why they were 12 points ahead of their visitors.

Peterborough’s Nick Robertson took the league’s overall goals-scoring lead (50) with a hat trick on Barrie’s goalies. Arturs Silov gave up five goals on 35 shots before being replaced by Jet Greaves, who gave up one goal on 12 shots.

Other Peterborough scorers were Brady Hinz, Max Grondin and John Parker-Jones.

Despite the loss, the Colts have clinched a berth in the post-season as the North Bay Battalion defeated the Niagara IceDogs, a scenario that gave Barrie the playoff spot.

Barrie sits fifth in the Eastern Conference with 60 points, four points ahead of Hamilton and nine behind Oshawa.

The Colts will try to right the ship in their final nine regular-season games and will begin that task Thursday, March 5 at home against their Central Division rival and leader Sudbury Wolves (66 points).

Game time for Thursday’s game is 7:30 p.m.
