Baycats ousted by Maple Leafs, falling in three games

Toronto scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to storm back for a 7-6 win over Barrie and sweep the best-of-five series

Toronto scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to storm back for a 7-6 win over Barrie and sweep the best-of-five quarter-final Sunday afternoon at Christie Pits.

Marcus Knecht went 3-for-5 and drove in the final two runs to seal the victory. Jordan Castaldo drove in two on a pair of hits, Johnathan Solazzo went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Justin Marra drove in a run and scored, Jose Vinicio scored twice and Damon Topolie and Greg Carrington each had two hits and a run.

Chris Nagorski (1-0) picked up the win, giving up a run and a hit with a strikeout in two innings of relief. Sam Greene started and went four innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Ryan Rijo homered and drove in three for the fifth-place Baycats, who battled back from an early 3-0 deficit and led 6-4 after scoring twice in the eighth.

Royce Ando had two hits, including a solo home run, James Anderson picked up a pair of hits and Carson Burns also went deep with the bases empty.

Brandon Hillier (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning. He struck out two.

Cardinals one win from Royal upset

HAMILTON – After finishing 19 games back of Guelph in the regular season, the Hamilton Cardinals are one win away from eliminating the Royals from the IBL quarter-final.

Ryan Burnside went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run for the Cardinals in Sunday’s 7-4 win at home.

Hamilton scored six times in the fourth inning and didn’t look back. Laine Renaud and Jacob Underwood each had a pair of hits and an RBI, Jeremie Veilleux went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while Dennis Dei Baning, Luis Jean, Robin Fox-Pappas and Maclean Van Raay all drove in a run.

Cardinals’ starter Corben Peters (1-0) was lifted with two outs in the sixth after giving up four runs on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Daury Torrez fanned four over 3.1 one-hit innings for the save.

Conner Morro went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run for the Royals. Dalton Pompey singled twice and drove in a run, and Justin Interisano and Brendan Keys each had an RBI.

Brandon Deans (0-1) was touched for six runs on six hits over three innings.

Majors advance to semifinal

LONDON – The IBL’s top seed is off to the semifinal.

London completed its sweep of the last-place Brantford Red Sox with a 23-4 win Sunday night at Labatt Park.

Starling Joseph led the way with two home runs and seven RBI. Byron Reichstein also went deep and drove in two while scoring five times. Daniel Perrier went 5-for-6 with two RBI and three runs, Kieran Bowles drove in five on three hits, Jakob Newton and Taylor Wright each had two hits and an RBI, Chris McQueen, Cleveland Brownlee and Phil Whelan all scored twice, Andrew Lawrence singled, doubled and drove in two and Keith Kandel added an RBI.

Fernando Fernandez (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 4.2 two-hit innings and striking out three while walking one. London starter Bo Lewington gave up four runs on six hits in 2.1 innings. He walked two and struck out six.

Red Sox starter Sean Hood-Tidman (0-1) lasted four innings and allowed 10 runs (six earned) on 11 hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Jesse Fishbaum and Nolan Gallagher each had an RBI for the Red Sox. Tyler Wilson went 3-for-5 with two runs and Jon Dziomba singled twice.
