Winterfest brings people into the cold out for some fun

The air was cool enough to keep the snow around, but the beautiful weather made Winterfest 2020's opening day a success for visitors.

Winterfest kicked off this morning as hundreds of people hit downtown Barrie for warm treats and fun activities.

The annual event, which got underway Saturday, takes place at the start of February as a way to beat the winter blues.

While local residents mark it on their calendar every season, the event also brings in tourists who are looking for outdoor fun.

Cassandra Dell’Aquila and her sister, Alex, came from Wasaga Beach to experience their first Winterfest.

Although she had never been to Winterfest before, Cassandra says she can see why it's so popular.

“It seemed like a really fun activity for the winter,” she told BarrieToday. “I’d never been and so far I’m really liking the donuts, which were really good. This is a really fun way to get through the winter with so many things going on.”

The lake does not have any activities on it, but folks were sliding along the surface of the ice-covered Kempenfelt Bay as they were with the pond in Heritage Park.

Kevin Mardell and his kids were on the lake and pond with skates to not just get outside and enjoy the cool air, but get some energy burned as well.

“It is a fantastic way for the kids to get tired. Maybe I can peacefully enjoy the hockey games tonight,” said Mardell. “Seriously, though, all parents should be out here with the little ones. Great job by the city for doing this.”

Winterfest continues Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
