SIMCOE COUNTY GREENBELT COALITION

In recognition of the Simcoe County Greenbelt Coalition’s (SCGC) ninth anniversary, Catherine McKenna, former federal minister of the environment, will be virtually speaking to executive director Margaret Prophet about environmentalism, the role of politics in a changing world and community movement building.

Says Prophet, “In a time of rising divisions, SCGC feels it is important to find common ground. We all want to have affordable communities, safety, prosperity and to have a better world now and into the future, so let’s talk about it. Let’s learn from one another and make plans to do just that.

“Since SCGC’s inception we have grown from a small group of 12 organizations in the region to one that works with over 45 groups across Simcoe including faith-based communities, ratepayers, farm organizations, social service agencies and environmental groups. We started with the idea that if people can find common ground and are willing to learn from one another and be willing to work through differences, then amazing things can happen.”

The coalition has been instrumental in protecting the Greenbelt and pushing for stronger policies to preserve water resources, farmland and endangered species habitat both locally and provincially. The coalition has also been working to stop sprawling subdivisions in favour of housing that will be more affordable and sustainable.

The webinar is on Tuesday, May 7 at 7 p.m. and is open to the public. Tickets can be purchased for $10 and are available at www.simcoecountygreenbelt.ca. For those who would like to attend but the price is a barrier, arrangements can be made by contacting organizers.
