SPRINGWATER TWP. - The Township of Springwater joins municipalities across Ontario, Canada and the world in opening the doors to cultural and heritage buildings as part of the Doors Open program.

On Sept. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., participating municipalities will offer residents and visitors special access to historical sites, some of which are seldom open to the public.

This year’s event aligns with the Township of Springwater’s 25th anniversary since the amalgamation in 1994. To celebrate, doors to the LEED Silver certified Administration Centre will be opened to offer a tremendous showcase of the area's history. Located on the former site of the Midhurst Forest Station, which began operating in 1922, the building is the first official home of the Township’s administration staff.

During Doors Open, a wide range of activities will be offered to provide a fun and educational exploration of Springwater for the whole family to enjoy. Memorabilia and artifacts of cultural, political and natural heritage significance will be showcased.

Exclusive building tours of the Administration Centre will give attendees an insider’s peek into the site’s historical significance and the building’s environmentally friendly features. Attendees will be able to take home a complimentary tree sapling in recognition of the former Midhurst Forest Station, which at its peak was shipping 11 million trees annually.

“We are proud to take part in the Doors Open program to expose architecture, culture and heritage in our community,” said Mayor Don Allen. “This is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the history of our municipality and engage with like-minded residents and visitors. I’d like to thank volunteers on the heritage and cultural advisory committees for leading this year’s activities to make it such a great and successful event.”

Upwards of 40 different heritage sites will participate county-wide. Visit www.doorsopenontario.on.ca to learn more and view participating heritage sites.
