Two off-duty OPP officers jumped to the aid of security guards trying to arrest a man at the LCBO branch on Big Bay Point Road at Yonge Street.

The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. Friday as security guards were struggling with an alleged shoplifter who was resisting arrest.

The off-duty officers, who did not know each other, sprang into action when they saw the scuffle.

"Certainly good on them. They jumped in and assisted, preventing anyone from getting injured," said Barrie Police Staff Sgt. Mike Winn.

The off-duty officers helped subdue and hold the man until Barrie Police arrived and took him into custody.

The man, who police allege was intoxicated, is accused of stealing bottles of liquor from the store.

The man is charged with theft under and resisting arrest.

No one was injured.

Staff Sgt. Winn says Barrie has a large population of police officers from various services.

"It's always nice when you get police officers jumping in and it's not out of the ordinary," Winn said.  "Makes for a safer community."

Neither the LCBO nor the security company G4S Canada would comment.
