Sunday's heavy rainfall caused local flooding, road closures

Barrie experienced flooding in some areas of the city Sunday night when about 50 millimetres of rain fell in a very short period of time

Getting around Barrie was a bit more challenging Sunday night.

The city experienced significant rainfall beginning at approximately 6 p.m., Aug. 22, causing several reports of flooding, including in the area of Essa Road at Fairview Road as well as along Tiffin Street.

Barrie experienced flooding in some areas of the city last night when about 50 millimetres of rain fell in a very short period of time, according to City of Barrie spokesperson Scott LaMantia.

"This much rain in a short period of time can overwhelm certain storm-water sewers, leading to flooding on the streets," he said. "City staff were out this morning with street sweepers in the affected areas and were working to clean catch basins to remove any accumulated debris."

Fire Chief Cory Mainprize told BarrieToday the city experienced standing water in several areas from last night’s rain, but that there were no ongoing issues from the city’s standpoint.

“It took a while to drain away, but there’s no damage that we are aware of. Most of the spots, (such as) on Essa Road, was because of the ongoing construction and some of the drainage wasn’t operating the way it would normally be operating,” he said. “But there was really nothing significant from any of our incidents or our reports.”

Barrie police helped close the intersection of Fairview and Essa roads for a period of time, noted communications co-ordinator Jennett Mays.

The Highway 400 northbound on- and off-ramps at Essa Road were closed Sunday evening due to flooding. The OPP reported all ramps had reopened around 4 a.m., Monday.
