Created by the Canadian Down Syndrome Society, “Canadian Down Syndrome Week is our week to show the world that Canada is where ALL people are valued, fully participating citizens,” states the CDSS website. “It is our week to celebrate people with Down syndrome and teach others to #SeeTheAbility.”

In Simcoe County, individuals living with Down syndrome and their families are supported by the Down Syndrome Association of Simcoe County. The charity is largely driven by volunteers, and offers a full slate of social events, programs, and bursaries for its members.

All members are welcome to participate in the dance program and the Bowling Buddies Bowling League, along with the Club 21 all ages social club, and events like the Christmas Party and the World Down Syndrome Day Dinner and Dance.

There is also a monthly play group for the youngest members, those under six years old, and the group also supplies New Parent Packages to area hospitals. Funds are raised through donations, grants, and three annual fundraisers, including the Step UP for Down Syndrome Fun Walk, being held November 4th at the Tiffin Centre.

One of the programs offered by the DSASC is the Young Adults Day Program, which was started in 2016 as a direct response to the needs of the member families.

“Once our young adults turn 21, they age out of school and then there isn’t much for them to do,” explains DSASC Executive Director, Jennifer van Gennip. “Most funded day programs have long waitlists, and they aren’t always a good fit for our members. We are very happy to be able to offer the Young Adults Day Program for young adults living with Down syndrome, designed to meet their needs of social interaction, life skills development, and community involvement. It’s a unique program meeting a very specific need in our community.”
