Simcoe-Grey MPP Brian Saunderson has announced funding for a new elementary school in Wasaga Beach, which means the project can go out to tender now.

The province has approved $14.9 million for Wasaga Beach Public School, which is earmarked for the Sunnidale Trails subdivision.

According to the Simcoe County District School Board, the new school was approved by the Ministry of Education in March 2018. At that time, the construction value was estimated at $10.8 million.

According to the school board website, the design for the school is complete and the board was waiting on provincial approval to proceed with construction.

A news release issued by Saunderson's office indicated the new school will have capacity for 406 elementary students.

“The funding for a new elementary school in Wasaga Beach is great news for our community,” Saunderson said in the news release. “This investment will ensure families and students have access to a quality learning environment in the years ahead.”

According to the MPP, the Simcoe County District School Board now has the province's approval to put the project out for tender.

On Monday, Saunderson also announced $1.1 million in new funding for the renovation of a two-room child-care centre at Tecumseth Beeton Elementary School on Patterson Street in Beeton. Once completed, the project will deliver 39 child-care spaces for local families.
