MIDHURST – From Oct. 17-23, 2021, the County of Simcoe is celebrating Local Government Week. Each year, this event is recognized across the Province of Ontario to showcase municipalities’ commitment to building healthy, vibrant communities. It aims to increase awareness about the important role that local governments play in communities across Ontario and to encourage civic participation.

“Local governments play a crucial role in building communities and making them stronger,” said Warden George Cornell. “This week ensures that residents across Ontario are able to learn more about how their local government provides valuable programs and services to communities. Personally, I want to take this opportunity to encourage residents and youth to consider joining municipal government, become a committee member, take an interest in Council meetings, volunteer or consider a career in government. It is important that we ensure that the next generation of leaders in our province and our country are well versed on the importance of local representation and governance.”

The County of Simcoe, as well as its 16 member municipalities and two separated cities provide support to communities across the region including paramedic services, waste collections, road maintenance, emergency management, transportation, social services, land planning, long-term care, tourism, and economic development, among many other programs.
