Section of Peel St. closed next week for reconstruction

City says​ infrastructure in the Gunn Street area was constructed in the early to mid-1950s and is approaching the end of its lifespan

Peel Street in east-end Barrie will be closed next week for a reconstruction project in the neighbourhood.

Mar-King Construction Company its sub-contractors require a full road closure on Peel Street between Wellington Street East and Grove Street East tentatively from Monday, Aug. 29 until Friday, Sept. 2 to complete work related to the Gunn Street reconstruction project, which extends from Peel Street to St. Vincent Street.

The roadway will be open to local traffic and emergency services will have access to respond within the closure, but not to travel through it.

Detour route in effect: :

Peel Street - Wellington St. E. - Owen St. - Grove St. E. - Peel St.

Peel Street - Grove St. E. - Owen St. - Wellington St. E. - Peel St.

The city says ​​most of the infrastructure in the Gunn Street area was constructed in the early to mid-1950s and is at or approaching the end of its maximum potential lifespan. It has experienced age-related deterioration or physical failure, such as watermain breaks, and is need of replacement.

Work happening in the neighbourhood includes new sanitary sewer, storm sewer, watermain, curb and gutter, sidewalk, and asphalt.
