Second Sobeys location proposed for Mapleview Dr. in south end

Barrie residents will have a chance to check out the plans for Mapleview Drive East location during public meeting Tuesday evening

Attention shoppers! A new commercial plaza with a food store could be coming to south Barrie.

A public meeting will be held Tuesday evening for the proposed rezoning of 651, 655, 659, 669 and 673 Mapleview Dr. E., by Sobeys, at the intersection of Yonge Street in the St. Paul's area.

The rezoning would permit the development of a commercial plaza with six building footprints, including the potential for a variety of retail uses and a food store on these five vacant lots, which are almost 8.7 acres.

The proposed zoning-bylaw amendment seeks to change the zoning on this land from agricultural general (AG) to general commercial with special provisions (C4)(SP-XXX).

These variances include reductions to minimum front-yard setbacks, minimum side-yard setbacks, minimum side-yard setbacks adjoining a street, and an increase in the maximum building height.

Sobeys also has a grocery store at 37 Mapleview Dr. W., in Barrie.

Following the public meeting, a staff report to planning committee is anticipated to be brought forward in late 2022 or early 2023 for consideration of the proposed zoning bylaw amendment.

Should planning committee and Barrie city council approve the rezoning, a subsequent application for site-plan control will be required.

Tuesday’s planning committee meeting includes three public meetings. This one is number two of the three.

Planning committee is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., in the council chamber and online.
