On behalf of council, staff and residents in the Township of Ramara, it is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of our former mayor and county warden, Dr. Tom Garry.

Dr. Tom Garry had 21 years of municipal experience and served as a councillor from 1977-1978, a reeve for the Township of Mara from 1978-1985 and 1991-1993 and as the Township of Ramara mayor from 1994-2003. As well, in 2002, Dr. Tom Garry served as the County of Simcoe warden.

During his tenure on council and as a County of Simcoe warden, Dr. Garry demonstrated great integrity, leadership and community advocacy. Along with having a medical practice in the community, Dr. Tom Garry was the driving force with the Rama and Mara amalgamation, the development of the Ramara Centre and other community projects. As a pillar in the community, Dr. Tom Garry’s vision was to create a community for the present and future generations focused on sustainability, growth and community spirit.

“The Township of Ramara has suffered a great loss,” expresses Mayor Basil Clarke. “Dr. Tom Garry was a wonderful, kind man who cared deeply for the Ramara community he chose to call home. I was fortunate to have served on council when he was mayor, and on many occasions over the years, I would seek his guidance and perspective. He was an inspiration to me, a friend and my mentor; I will miss him dearly. Tom, who always had the best interest of the municipality and the community, will be deeply missed.”

The Township of Ramara extends our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers to Dr. Garry’s family and loved ones.
