If you think your community needs a school, get your comments in to your public school board trustee before April 28.
In advance of the Simcoe County District School Board’s next council meeting on April 28 — when they will be determining their final ranked list of capital priorities to send to the province by May 21 — some trustees have been making presentations at municipal councils to bring politicians up to speed on the challenges their schools are facing.
As part of the April 28 school board meeting, public board staff will be recommending where new schools should be built, replaced or expanded across Simcoe County.
Public school board staff first presented the unranked preliminary list of their top 10 priorities at their Feb. 3 business and facilities standing committee meeting. To read our full story about that meeting, click here.
The capital projects currently under consideration for the next three-year cycle, listed alphabetically, are as follows:
- Banting Memorial High School (replacement school)
- Killarney Beach Public School (addition)
- New Alcona elementary school (growth accommodation)
- New Alliston elementary school (growth accommodation)
- New Angus elementary school (growth accommodation)
- New Barrie #1 Southeast elementary school (growth accommodation)
- New Barrie #2 Southeast elementary school (growth accommodation)
- New Barrie #1 Southwest elementary school (growth accommodation)
- New Bradford secondary school (growth accommodation)
- New Orillia elementary school (growth accommodation)
- New Tottenham elementary school (growth accommodation)
- Northwest Simcoe secondary schools (growth accommodation)
After trustees approve the ranked list on April 28, board staff will prepare business cases for each project to present to the province. The province will make its own determination of which schools receive funding, based on business cases as well as other factors.
The province has said $550 million will be up for grabs provincewide through this round of capital priority funding. It is anticipated the province will announce which schools will be funded in August or September.
